Ejection forces are seriously affected by the amount of force used to mount the tip onto the pipette. When using traditional tips many scientists will employ a ‘pounding’ or ‘slamming’ motion to ensure the tip is fitted securely to the pipette shaft. This need is compounded when using a lower quality ‘universal fit’ tip that is poorly designed and manufactured and does not fit pipette shaft correctly.

Studies carried out on a wide range of standard manual pipettes have shown that ejection forces can typically be in the region of 4kg.

Consequently, due to the high forces used to mount the tip, the ejection force then required to remove it is also significantly increased, resulting in high forces exerted on the user every time a tip needs changing.

However, avoiding this can be inexpensive and straightforward. Combining good laboratory practices with quality pipettes and tips, can substantially reduce the strain involved in pipetting and will improve your accuracy & precision.
